Born 10 April 1891
1904 – the Bendigo Austral Society, which conducted competitions for pianofort, singing, recitations and amateur theatricals, decided to offer a scholarship worth a total of £40 to a local student below the age of fourteen years. I was the fortunate winner.
1904 – 1909 kindness of the Marist Brothers of St. Joseph’s College, I was enrolled in their school at Hunter’s Hill Sydney.
1909 I was articled to a young solicitor in Bendigo.
1914 Admitted to the Bar
1915 4 September Enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force
1916 June. Commissioned.
1916 December. Served in Europe on the Western Front with the 22nd Battalion
1917 May 3. During the Second Battle of Bullecourt, he led his company into battle, and despite being severely wounded, remained at his post until the company was relieved. For these actions, Gorman was awarded the Military Cross.
1919 Early. Reached the rank of Captain
1919 October. Discharged from the AIF
1920 6 September. Married French-born Marthe Vallée
1929 Takes silk as a Queen’s Counsel.
1931 Unsuccessfully standing as a candidate for the Victorian Legislative Council in 1931
1932 Primary Producers Restoration League (Chapter 5)
1935 Served as an influential advisor and intermediary for the Country Party Premier of Victoria, Albert Dunstan.
1937 – 1964 VRC Committee
1939 Publisher of Truth Newspaper
1940 Retired from active practice from the Bar, although he retained rooms at Equity Chambers
1943. Appointed to the Second Australian Imperial Force. Substantively holding the rank of colonel, he was appointed as a temporary brigadier and fulfilled the role of Chief Inspector of Army Administration, before being sent to the United Kingdom to command the AIF Reception Group, which was responsible for repatriating released prisoners of war back to Australia.
1945 November Transferred to the AIF reserve list
1949-1955 Consul for Greece in Victoria
1952 Came out of retirement to act as Counsel for former Premier Thomas Hollway at a Royal Commission on bribery charges
1954 Came out of retirement to act as Counsel for inquiry into the Petrov Affair
1956 – 1968 Chairman Australian Dried fruits Export control board
1960 He was made a Commander (CBE)
1966 Elevated to Knight Commander (KBE)
